“Playing it dumb”…..!!!

I have a former student who is doing postgraduate studies in a European country, and who is a regular reader of my site. I honour him, I respect him and I love him very much because he is a young person who is trying to “disentangle” himself from the mediocrity and the greyness of the established social roles, so that he can evolve into a real creative individual with a universal conscience. Yet, I consider it a bit strange when this young man, often expresses the opinion that my texts are not very optimistic. And I always try to explain to him that just the process of trying to identify what is real, is an act of faith and hope. Turning now to my friend Phedros from the swimming pool (extra-The psychological state of the young today, 2009-02-01), our exchange of messages have almost but stopped due to the fact that I had been trying to explain to him my position that it is not enough just to recognize all those harsh and impersonal everyday realities;but it is also very imperative to question all these everyday realities, in a substantial way if they subvert our personality and our psyche. And this can be realized only when one begins to recognize and respect one΄s own personality and the creative potentialities of life itself, not the limited and unnatural framework of a “virtual society”.

Why is the disappearance of the “Neanderthal” Man 30,000 years ago, significant today? (Part A)

The “Neanderthal” Man represents a branch of the human specie who lived for more than 200,000 years in a large geographical area, covering all of Europe and reaching into Central Asia.More specifically,we could say that the “Neanderthal” Man was the only humanoid who had lived in this vast territory for 200,000 years;a territory which included the Iberian Peninsula,Italy, regions north of the Pyrenees and the Alps, central and eastern Europe, and portions of Asia. The name “Neanderthal”is derived from the Neander Valley in western Germany, where in 1856 the first fossils of a humanoid were found, and were identified as such. What is of great interest,is the fact that for 200,000 years, the “Neanderthal” had absolute dominion over all this vast territory, surviving drastic climatic and environmental changes, especially within the course of the different “glacial” or “ice” ages, when about 45,000 years ago ,another human specie began to arrive in eastern Europe and in the Iberian Peninsula;originating from the Middle East and North Africa. The crux of this interest lies in the fact that within 15,000 years of this “new specie” arrival, the “Neanderthal” human specie had completely disappeared, and was completely replaced by this “new human” invador. This “new human specie” was given the name “Cro-Magnon” after the location in France where the first fossils of this human specie were found in 1868.The “Cro-Magnon”Man is the sole “human” ancestor of modern human beings(Homo Sapiens);their DNA is identical, while no trace of “Neanderthal” DNA(mitochondrial DNA which is Matrilinear) has been discovered in “Cro-Magnon” bones.Nevertheless,we have to mention here that DNA evidence shows that Neanderthals had a DNA which is very similar to that of modern humans.

A letter to a friend (Conclusion)

My dear friend, finally, your younger son after two nights of intense discussions and some revelations about how he really felt, he began to look upbeat. So I decided to stay on one more night, while we were going to leave together the following morning with the ferry boat. Your younger son had arranged some meetings with his friends and I had to visit my aging father. Throughout the day, that third day, everything brimmed with serenity, joy and creative communication, AS OLD TIMES!!!Those grey shadows that lingered, had disappeared from his eyes. It was only much later that I realised that this sincere and positive communication between your son and myself was stifling you, because you must have felt out of touch. I was then so very proud and contented with this positive turn of events, while unconsciously ignoring the vast amounts of egotism and insecurity you were carrying within your mind and your soul. I was really so mistaken!!!

“Nanny 911” – finally, a worthwhile television programme!

One of the most popular syndicated T.V.shows around the world,is an English speaking “reality show” which has all the merits of a “social documentary” and none of the exaggerations of a “virtual” reality T.V. show that dehumanizes, exploits and distorts the individual. This syndicated T.V. show is called “Nanny 911″,and is shown in Greece under a different title and of course dubbed in Greek.”Nanny 911” is a production of Fox Entertainment Enterprises. What is so extraordinary about this particular “reality show”is that it is produced in a very “professional” way while it is also socially constructive and beneficial. It presents in a very objective yet sensitive way, the destructive effects of a highly materialistic and competitive Western life style on human nature and on human relations.

Christ, a wise radical

thumbtree2Many scholars who have studied human civilization, have through their analyses supported the position that the true forerunner of Christ “ideologically” was not John the Baptist(as has been taught in schools and seminaries), but Socrates who lived 4 centuries before in Athens. One could briefly say, that these scholars ascertained that these two “enlightened”personalities had based their “beliefs” on primeval human values. These universal values not only reinforced the cohesion of human beings but also the natural potentialities of each person for free judgement, free self-expression and a free creative spirit.

Our child

For years now,I have been going to an indoor swimming pool because I love to swim and also because the feel of water makes me calm and alive. The hours that I swim are between 1p.m. and 3p.m.,since this is the time which I am free(due to the afternoon private lessons)and also because during those hours there are few swimmers coming to the pool.During this time there are also no young people, which means peace and quiet. Three years ago,I noticed a little boy who came to the swimming pool with a private swimming instructor.I took notice of him first of all because during these hours there are no children but also because this little boy looked puny, fragile, scared and not very willing to follow his coach΄s instructions. I calculated(wrongly) that the little boy must have been between 7 and 8 years old.One time, when I was swimming, I approached the little boy and spoke to him in a down-to-earth way, telling him that he shouldn΄t be afraid, and that he should feel comfortable with water because it was an ideal way to exercise. The child listened calmly to what I had to say while his woman instructor showed tension and even some hostility. It was then that I realised that the boy was under special supervision and control.

The subconscious never lies. (Dedicated to my friends, Phedros and Christos)

thumbimg0001During the last 25 years that I have been giving lessons to young and old, from children with learning disabilities to young people wanting to undertake their higher studies in a foreign language,I have discovered a common factor among all of those young individuals. This factor for me represents a valuable tool to better understand the psyche and the personalities of all my students, both female and male. This common element can be described as follows:During the course of the lesson ,many young people have the tendency to make “doodles” or abstract drawings on pieces of paper,on pages of note-books,or even on my cigarette or cigar packages. These sketches are of great value to me because they are spontaneous creations describing or defining the real situation or disposition of the person. It is the subconscious expressing itself, meaning the truly creative and revealing aspect of the human persona, exactly like the dreams.

A letter to a good friend (Part D)

My dear friend, last time when I took the decision to come to your countryhouse to spend 2 or 3 days with all of you, I took this decision specifically for the purpose of getting close to your younger son;without him knowing it of course. I wanted to help him disentangle himself from the dark web he was entrapped in for the last few years, affecting seriously his physical health, his mental capacities and his emotional stability. I had to use every means to make him abandon these nightmarish feelings of self-rejection and generally of rejecting life itself. I first communicated those intentions(to be with your younger son)to his brother by phone, 2 or 3 times, and he felt very happy about the whole idea. Your older son was the only person who knew that I would visit your countryhouse for this specific purpose, and we both agreed that he would also be there for support. Your older son felt contented and satisfied with my plans, and he encouraged me because he had known for a long time(before you) how tired and disturbed his brother was, since this situation had began when they were both studying abroad, and living in the same city.

The psychological state of the young today

For almost 20 years,I have been going to a swimming pool because I have loved swimming since very young, and also because my contact with the water sooths me psychologically and physically.3 months ago,I noticed a young person in the swimming pool who must have become a member during that time.I took notice of him first because the time of day I swim(12-2p.m.),there are almost no young people there, and second, I saw a very talented swimmer, who was swimming with such extreme intensity and such spastic movements, that I felt it almost “unnatural”.
